NORTH

What’s YOUR “North”?

It depends on what direction you’re going.

Liz Williams explains “North” in this week’s Truth in Two (full text below).

May you find “North” in “Truth,” God’s Truth.

FULL TEXT:

Liz Williams is a student I have dialogued with on the IUPUI campus over the last couple of years. We discussed her studies from a Christian perspective. When she graduated this past May I invited her on our Warp & Woof radio show to talk about her experience as a student. Toward the end of our conversation I asked about how she did university research. This was her reply,

“I am terrible with directions. I always joke that wherever I’m going is “north.” If I’m facing north right now, then I turned around and went in the opposite direction, in my mind, that would also be “north.” That’s how a lot of people approach their research studies. Whatever I believe or feel, that’s “north.” A lot of people – me included – can come to research with their belief which forms their thesis and then they discover that their research does not support their thesis. So then you do that thing where you quote others who agree with you. At some point I had to come to the idea that my thesis might be wrong. As Christians in the university setting we already have a “north.” God’s Truth can center you and affect how you live.”

I could not agree more. But in our culture, “truth” often depends on “whose truth,” what a person or group believes is “truth.” At the Comenius Institute we believe God is the author and judge of all truth no matter who says it. In fact, Psalm 19 says even the material world shows His handiwork and declares His knowledge. As Christians have said since Augustine and Aquinas, “All Truth is God’s Truth.”

And God’s Truth gives us a true “North,” no matter what direction we are going.

For Truth in Two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, President of the Comenius Institute, personally seeking truth wherever it’s found.

  1. “Whatever I believe or feel, that’s North.”

But if you’re going South, you’re going to go South. Even if you say you’re headed North. Because North is North, and it cannot change, will not change, no matter what you think. God’s Truth is much the same–it cannot change and it will not change. You can say that you’re headed North, but if you’re really headed South, then South is where you will go, and it is where you will end up.

And if we relate this to God’s Truth, then you really don’t want to go South…

    Nice metaphor.
Thanks, Dr. Eckel! Do you still teach as an adjunct at IUPUI?

    1. Hey Josh! Glad you liked it! Yes. I teach two sections of “Reading, Writing & Inquiry” on T/Th.
