Woody Allen brought attention to the question of choice in the movie Crimes and Misdemeanors. An extra-marital affair leads a man to hire out the murder of his mistress. Packed with ethical discussion, Woody Allen’s movie identifies possible choices of right and wrong.

In a dream sequence, Martin Landau’s character interacts with his family around a dinner table about choices that drive human action. Major philosophies and religious beliefs are all given voice in this exceptional five minute scene. Viewers are left with the question “Does my choice between right and wrong matter?”

“Choice” is a key concern for humans.

Choices. There are really, only two. As country-folk say, “Yer either fer Him or agin Him.”

The choices made by Cain and Abel in Genesis run through the Bible: choose God or gods, wickedness or righteousness, wisdom or foolishness, the narrow way or the wide way.

The story of Cain and Abel tells us the universal truth:

“Yer either fer Him or agin Him.”

There are two choices, two roads.

The “two-roads” metaphor starts in Genesis 4: the choice is between rebellion and righteousness.

Joshua declared “Choose this day whom you will serve.”

Elijah offered the choice, “If The Lord is God follow Him; but if Baal is god, then follow him.”

Jesus made it clear. There are two roads. Everybody gets to choose one. Jesus says “There is My way and then, all the others.”

One can choose the way of Cain or that of Abel, Pharaoh or Yahweh, Jesus or other gods.

There is no middle ground.

There is no fence to sit on.

There is no third choice.

Follow God. Don’t follow God.

It’s that simple. And it’s that difficult.

At the Comenius Institute we ask the question “Does my choice matter?” And the answer is “Absolutely.”

For Truth in Two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, President of the Comenius Institute, personally seeking Truth wherever it’s found.
