Business Ethics

Stealing ethics?

Where else would you get them?

We all believe in right and wrong, especially when it comes to money.

We should not be surprised by the reason; watch our two minute video to find out (full text below).

WHERE we get our ethics from shows WHY we believe in common virtue.

FULL TEXT:

Asked to give a talk about business ethics I began my research. I perused and scanned half a dozen books. It took me all of thirty minutes to make the startling discovery. All the business books were stealing their ideas on ethics from Solomon in The Bible. Authors were using biblical principles straight out of Proverbs to communicate business principles.

I was shocked. How could business leaders, bound by ethical principles, espoused in their own books, steal from Solomon?!

And then it hit me. The authors couldn’t help themselves. The books simply reflected what theologians call “common grace.” I realized that I was viewing an example of God’s beneficence to all people.

Here is my definition of “common grace”: The goodness of all creation benefits all people. The Scriptural emphasis on God’s beneficence and goodness is seen in weather, language, discovery, agriculture, business, and everything else.

What do Christian businesses have in common with all businesses? Since pieces of truth exist in business because of God’s goodness within creation, the Christian recognizes commerce is regulated by embedded creational principles.

We find ethical principles for everyday living in any subject; business is no exception.

The book of Proverbs commends itself to all people, cultures, places, and times because God has embedded basic principles within His creation. Life “works” a certain way because God ordered His world this way.

Proverbs is a “how” book. We are taught about situations that arise in daily life for which we need foresight and thoughtful pondering.

At the Comenius Institute we believe everyday life connects with God’s view of life. I say it this way:

Common Grace allows

Common Truth to establish

Common Law for

Common Folk finding

Common Ground with all.

Ethics are stolen every day from the best book on the subject: the Bible.

For truth in two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, president of the Comenius Institute, personally seeking truth wherever it’s found.
