FULL TEXT:

In the movie World War Z Brad Pitt and his allies fight zombies. Amid the mayhem, world leaders are trying to find the solution to the zombie virus. Most people had no defense against the rampaging zombie hordes. Everyone was just trying to get away. One nation, Israel, was ahead of the others in terms of defensive operations against the zombie apocalypse. They had built a tall wall before the worldwide infection spread. Brad Pitt’s character learns that the reason Israel was ahead of other nations to protect themselves was something called “the tenth man.”

The “tenth man” concept came about because Israeli leaders in the past had sometimes all come to the same conclusion and were all wrong. The famous movie line comes from a high ranking Israeli official who says, “It is the duty of the tenth man to disagree with the majority if everyone else has come to the same conclusion.” The Jewish leader explains that on a council of ten, if nine of the members agree, it is the duty of the “tenth man” to take the opposite track, to assume the nine are wrong, to plan a different approach.

We all need a “tenth man.” The book of Proverbs says it best: in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. Getting another perspective, hearing voices other than our own is important when making decisions, whether we are in a zombie apocalypse or not.

At the Comenius Institute we believe God is the author of all truth no matter who says it. In fact, Psalm 19 says even the material world shows His handiwork and declares His knowledge. As Christians have said since Augustine and Aquinas, “All Truth is God’s Truth,” even from the tenth man.

For Truth in Two, this is Dr. Mark Eckel, President of the Comenius Institute, personally seeking truth wherever it’s found.
